Sasu Tarkoma is a Professor of Computer Science at the
University of Helsinki and Head of the Department of
Computer Science. He is also Director of the Helsinki
Center for Data Science and affiliated with the Helsinki
Institute for Information Technology HIIT. He has authored
4 textbooks and has published over 160 scientific
articles. He has seven granted US Patents. His research
has received a number of Best Paper awards and mentions,
for example at IEEE PerCom, ACM CCR, and ACM OSR.
In his talk, Sasu will present
the Helsinki Centre for
Data Science (HiDATA) that was established by the
University of Helsinki and Aalto University in 2017 for
addressing crucial societal and industrial challenges
pertaining to Data Science. The centre is organized as a
large multi-disciplinary network of researchers working on
both methods and applications, supported by Data Science
infrastructure. HiDATA facilitates the creation of
bottom-up multidisciplinary research spearheads addressing
the identified challenges. An example spearhead of the
work in HiDATA is the MegaSense research program
addressing accurate and low-cost air quality monitoring
for megacities. More
